The 50 years anniversary of HM The Queen’s accession to the throne

With the motto “God’s help, the love of The People, Denmark’s strength”, Her Majesty The Queen in January 2022 will have been the head of state of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland through a half century. On 14 January 2022, it will be 50 years since Frederik IX passed away and The Queen succeeded her father on the throne. Through her 50-year reign, The Queen has represented Denmark abroad and been a focal point at home.

The 50 years anniversary of The Queen’s accession to the throne will be marked and celebrated with a number of events in 2022 in which the Royal Family, representatives of official Denmark and a number of foreign guests will participate.

Because of the latest developments in the coronavirus situation and the recommendations of the health authorities, the Royal House of Denmark has postponed the major celebrations in the middle of January. Her Majesty would still like to have a festive celebration in which the Danish people can take part and has therefore decided to move the majority of the arrangements planned for January to the late summer of 2022.

A number of the events that had been scheduled to mark the 50th anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen’s Accession to the Throne in mid-January 2022 will instead be held on 10 and 11 September 2022. These include, among other things, a celebration at the Copenhagen City Hall, a command performance at the Royal Danish Theatre’s Old Stage, a celebratory church service in Copenhagen Cathedral and a gala banquet at Christiansborg Palace. In addition, there will be an opportunity to pay tribute to The Queen in connection with a grand changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace Square. The final program will be announced later in the year.

This page will be updated with information about events in connection with the 50 years anniversary of The Queen’s accession to the throne.
