The monarch is Denmark’s head of state, whose essential duties are to represent Denmark abroad and be a figurehead here at home. The monarchy in Denmark is constitutional in accordance with the Constitution, and the monarch, or the sovereign, formally heads the government and represents Denmark during incoming and outward-bound state visits.

History
The Royal Danish House is one of the world’s oldest, and can be traced back to Gorm the Old.

Amalienborg
Amalienborg in Copenhagen consists of four palaces: Christian VII’s Palace, Christian VIII’s Palace, Frederik VIII’s Palace and Christian IX’s Palace. Amalienborg became the royal residence after Christiansborg Palace burned in 1794, and The Queen resides in Christian IX’s Palace during the winter months. The Crown Prince Couple reside in Frederik VIII’s Palace.

In the spring and the fall, The Queen resides at Fredensborg Palace, which was built in 1719.

The Crown Jewels
The Crown Jewels are owned by the state and consist of four large sets of jewellery that are at The Queen’s disposal, for example in connection with state visits and gala banquets. It was Christian VI’s Queen Sophie Magdalene who, in her 1746 will, provided that her jewellery should always be at the disposal of the country’s sitting queen.
