The “Global Citizen Festival” will, in addition to the contributions from the speakers, offer a concert with the musicians Stevie Wonder, Kings of Leon, Alicia Keys and John Mayer. It is expected that 60,000 participants will be on hand during the festival, which takes place Saturday, 28 September.
As a member of the international panel High-Level Task Force for ICPD, The Crown Princess will, during the concert, address the importance of women’s and girls’ equality and rights in the fight against extreme poverty. In addition, singer and activist Bono will present a prize to Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in recognition of her work for equal rights for women and girls.
The 60,000 participants get access to the festival’s gratis tickets with points they have earned through engagement in activities that help fight poverty. The concert will also be streamed live globally.
Behind the festival is the “Global Poverty Project” in collaboration with the Cotton On Foundation with the aim of creating a global movement among citizens in the fight to end extreme poverty before 2030.
During the visit in New York, The Crown Princess also takes part in an event at the UN on Friday, 27 September. It deals with the international efforts in the fight against female genital mutilation in the world.
