His Royal Highness The Prince Consort has committed himself to being the patron of the year of gastronomy, which is a European recognition of the strong focus on food product innovation and good food in the Central Denmark Region and Denmark.

Aarhus and the Central Denmark Region are officially designated as a European Region of Gastronomy 2017 today, 29 September 2015, at an event in the EU pavilions at the world exhibition EXPO 2015 in Milan, Italy.

“I am pleased to be the patron for an initiative that will promote Nordic gastronomy in an international context, ensure more awareness of local producers and stimulate interest for food among new generations,” says The Prince Consort.

The designation as a European Region of Gastronomy has come about on the basis of a collaborative application titled “Rethink good food” from a wide range of partners: the Central Denmark Region, the Aarhus Municipality, European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017, Aarhus University, Aarhus Tech, Agrotech, Danish Food Cluster, Future Food Innovation and the Food Organisation of Denmark.

The title is awarded by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism in connection with an EU conference on food tourism at the world exhibition EXPO 2015 in Milan, Italy. In 2017, the Central Denmark Region will share the honour with the Riga Region in Latvia and eastern Lombardy in Italy.
