Trip to Madagascar

HRH The Prince Consort, as President of the Danish chapter of the World Wide Fund for Nature, takes part in a trip to Madagascar from 29 November-10 December 2014.
The Prince Consort is accompanied on the trip by the secretary general of WWF Denmark, Gitte Seeberg. On the tour, there will be visits at various WWF projects which, among other things, focus on forest preservation. During the visit on Madagascar, The Prince Consort will be briefed about and visit some of these projects.
WWF’s project for preserving the original forest on Madagascar includes, among other things, development of cooking ovens that use less wood and wood charcoal than regular ovens. The Prince Consort will visit the factory where the ovens are produced and get the opportunity to talk with some of the female users of the ovens.
The Prince Consort will also pay a visit in Tsimanampetsotse National Park, where WWF works to protect nature areas and conserve species. The area at Tsimanampetsotse National Park is the only place on Madagascar where the two species the “greater flamingo” and the “lesser flamingo” breed.
The Prince Consort will later visit a tortoise centre, where illegally-captured tortoises are handed in. The centre works to be able to put the tortoises out in nature again gradually, and WWF’s project contributes to increasing the level of knowledge about how threatened tortoises are, to monitoring the populations and to cooperating with the local residents to preserve them.
WWF World Wide Fund for Nature is an independent environmental organization that was founded in 1961 and that The Prince Consort took the initiative to establish in Denmark in 1972.
