The Barouche to Copenhagen City Hall

On Saturday, 10 September at 12:35, HM The Queen rides from Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg to Copenhagen City Hall in the Royal House of Denmark’s large d’Aumont carriage, which is ordinarily just called the Barouche. The route runs via Frederiksgade over Bredgade and right around the Marble Church. Afterwards, the Barouche continues along Store Kongensgade to Kongens Nytorv, where the Guard Hussar Regiment’s Mounted Squadron will escort The Queen in the open carriage down Strøget (the Pedestrian Zone) to City Hall Square and Copenhagen City Hall, with arrival at approximately 13:00.

The Royal Mews introduced the Barouche at the beginning of the 1900s, when it became popular to drive horse-drawn carriages “à la d’Aumont”. The modern carriage was driven by riders mounted on horses instead of the traditional coachman on the carriage. The carriage, which among other things was used during Christian X’s border crossing during the celebration of Reunification with Southern Jutland in 1920, was originally a closed Viennese carriage built by the Copenhagen court carriage builder Henry Fife. But, after a major conversion, it had been given a calash canopy and the coachman’s box had been removed, which is why it is now an open carriage.

Since then, a good many heads of state from all over the world have been transported in the d’Aumont carriage from Henry Fife, which on 10 September 2022 will be driven by two outriders and four horses harnessed in front of the carriage.

The Gold Coach to The Royal Danish Theatre

On Saturday, 10 September 2022 at 19:40, The Queen rides from Christian IX’s Palace at Amalienborg to The Royal Danish Theatre’s Old Stage at Kongens Nytorv in the Gold Coach. The route runs via Amaliegade to Sankt Annæ Plads, where the Guard Hussar Regiment’s Mounted Squadron will escort the Gold Coach along Bredgade, right around Kongens Nytorv and to The Royal Danish Theatre, with arrival before 20:00.

The coach, which is the Royal House of Denmark’s finest carriage, is used, among other times, for the traditional New Year’s levee in January, when The Queen rides in the coach from Amalienborg to Christiansborg Palace. The Gold Coach was built for Christian VIII by carriage builder Henry Fife in 1840 and is coated with 24-karat gold leaf, has four gilded crowns on the roof and has a painted coat of arms on the doors. The upholstered interior has room for two persons. In connection with the 40th Jubilee of Her Majesty’s Accession to the Throne in 2012, the undercarriage underwent an 8-month renovation, just as the 125-year-old coachman’s seat cloth at the front of the coach was replaced with a new hand-sewn cloth.

In keeping with tradition, on 10 September 2022, the Gold Coach will be driven with six horses harnessed in front, with a coachman on the seat cloth at the front of the carriage and a coachman on the front horse to the left.
