Program for official visit in Tallinn

The days of 15-16 June 2019, HM The Queen visits Estonia’s capital Tallinn in connection with the 800th anniversary of the Danish national flag Dannebrog’s descent from the sky.

On the anniversary, The Queen will begin the official visit in the Estonian capital, where there will be a focus on the Danish flag as well as the joint Danish-Estonian history. In addition to that, The Queen will also take part in the marking of the 100th anniversary of Estonia’s independence, which the country is celebrating from 2018-20.

Saturday, 15 June

Arrival in Tallinn on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog

The Queen arrives on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog in Estonia’s capital, Tallinn. Her Majesty will be received by Estonia’s President, HE Kersti Kaljulaid. Afterwards, The Queen will participate in an official welcoming ceremony.

Official opening of the exhibition “Dannebrog – The Flag That Fell from the Sky: The Golden Age of Danish Art”

Together, The Queen and the President will open the Golden Age exhibition “Dannebrog - The Flag That Fell from the Sky" at Kadriorg Palace Art Museum. At the exhibition, visitors will see works by, among others, Christen Købke, C. W. Eckersberg and Nicolai Abildgaard together with C.A. Lorentzen’s famous painting of Dannebrog, which is shown falling from the sky. The well-known painting is thus exhibited outside of Denmark for the first time. 

Wreath-laying ceremony at the War of Independence Monument

The Queen takes part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the War of Independence Monument in Tallinn. The monument is a memorial to those who fell in Estonia’s war for independence in 1918. 

Attendance of the show “The Legend of the Danish Flag” at Freedom Square

The Queen will be present at Freedom Square in the heart of Tallinn, where a family day will be held to celebrate the Danish and Estonian flags. There, The Queen watches the performance, in which the focal point is Dannebrog’s descent from the sky. Afterwards, Her Majesty will see the photo exhibition “Estonia-Denmark: Historical Highlights Throughout 800 Years”.

Opening of the exhibition “Dannebrog and Estonia 1219-2019”

In one of Tallinn’s four medieval artillery towers, The Queen opens the exhibition “Dannebrog and Estonia 1219-2019”. The exhibition is organized by the Danish Museum of National History, Frederiksborg Palace and Tallinn City Museum. The exhibition displays 800 years of history since the Battle of Lyndanisse on 15 June 1219.

The Queen opens Tallinn’s newly laid out garden, which bears the name The Danish Queen’s Garden. The garden is a supplement to The Danish King’s Garden, which is named after King Erik Menved. The Danish Queen’s Garden will hold 800 roses, which are planted so that they resemble the Danish flag.

The Queen visits The Danish King’s Garden, where The Danish Boys Choir will perform and Her Majesty will be presented a copy of the oldest known version of Dannebrog. 

The command performance “Estonia 100 and Dannebrog 800”

The Queen and the President attend a command performance at Estonia Concert Hall. There, the Danish ensemble Concerto Copenhagen and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir perform.

The Queen participates in a gala dinner at the Arvo Pärt Center, hosted by the President. 

Sunday, 16 June

Estonian-Danish celebration of the 800th anniversary of the establishment of the Danish church

St. Mary’s Cathedral was founded by Danes in the 13th century and is regarded as the oldest church in Tallinn. On Sunday, The Queen participates in the marking of the church’s 800th anniversary.
