Every year, The Queen delivers the New Year’s address on 31 December at 18.00, when the address is broadcast live on TV, radio and the Internet. Traditionally, the New Year’s address is given from The Queen’s reception room in Christian IX's Palace at Amalienborg.

This year, The Queen delivers the New Year’s address from Fredensborg Palace, where Her Majesty has residence as a result of the renovation of a large underground drainage installation at Amalienborg Palace Square by Amaliehaven. The renovation takes place as part of the effort to protect Frederiksstaden and the Bredgade Quarter from sudden downpours. There, during downpours, rain water is able to run quickly out into the harbor just by Amaliehaven.

The New Year’s address was previously delivered at Fredensborg Palace in 1979, 1980, 2014 and, most recently, in 2015, when Christian IX's Palace was under renovation.

The Royal Life Guard on New Year’s Eve
The Life Guard’s display of honor takes place in the Inner Palace Yard and begins immediately before the New Year’s address.  The watch stands at attention with rifles and with colors and two drummers while the address is delivered. After the address, “King Christian stood by the lofty mast” is played.

At Fredensborg Palace, the Outer Palace Yard will be open to the public. There will be no special arrangements at Amalienborg Palace Square in connection with the New Year’s address.
