Prior to the official embarkation, the Royal Yacht Dannebrog carries out preparatory sailing training and reconnoitres from the sea in some of the Danish ports and regions the royal family will visit during the year’s cruises aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.

The training school has the objective of educating and routinizing this year’s enlisted crew and the nucleus crew in how to handle forthcoming duties in connection with the year’s cruises. The enlisted crew members have gone through several months of education and training at the Naval School, Centre for Sergeant and Maritime Education in Frederikshavn, under the leadership of, among others, officers and non-commissioned officers from the Royal Yacht Dannebrog’s permanent crew. The crew of the Royal Yacht Dannebrog must be able to handle diverse tasks involved in sailing, safety, ceremonial matters and other things in connection with the cruises.

Over the summer, the Royal Yacht Dannebrog also sails in Danish waters in connection with royal activities and visits. During the entire sailing season, the Royal Yacht is used in various connections, and, among other things, receptions are held on board.

The ship strikes its command flag at the beginning of October, and the ship’s enlisted crew members are either sent home or continue service as permanent Navy personnel. In the wintertime, the Royal Yacht Dannebrog is quartered at Naval Base Frederikshavn, where it is maintained and made ready for the coming season.
