HRH The Crown Prince's 50th birthday
HRH The Crown Prince turns 50 on 26 May 2018, and the birthday will be celebrated with a number of events and activities.
18 May - Jubilee celebration by the Crown Prince Frederik Foundation
On 18 May, The Crown Prince presents grants from the Crown Prince Frederik Foundation in the Alexander Room of Christiansborg Palace. The foundation and its funds were a gift The Crown Prince received from Danish-Americans as a 25th birthday present during The Crown Prince’s studies at Harvard University.
In the evening, the Crown Prince Couple host a dinner for the board of directors and partners of the Crown Prince Frederik Foundation. The jubilee dinner takes place at Frederik VIII’s Palace, Amalienborg.
21 May - Royal Run
On 21 May, The Crown Prince participates in the running event Royal Run. Royal Run takes place in the cities Aalborg, Aarhus, Esbjerg, Odense and Copenhagen/Frederiksberg. Those interested can sign up for runs of two different distances, One Mile (1,609 km) and 10 km.
The Crown Prince begins the day in Alborg by running in a One Mile race, and afterwards The Crown Prince continues on to Aarhus, Esbjerg and Odense, and will likewise run One Mile races in these places. The Crown Prince ends the day in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg by running 10 km through the city.
In connection with the announcement of the Royal Run, The Crown Prince said:
“When I turn 50 next year, I will celebrate the day with, among other things, a run in which all of Denmark can join in. I have always very much liked sports and physical activity, and especially running. It provides enjoyment, physical well-being and energy. Royal Run will be a race aimed at experienced runners but equally at those who are tying up their running shoes for the first time, and all are welcome regardless of age. I hope that many people will participate in the Royal Run next year, when we will run together through five of Denmark’s beautiful cities.”
Royal Run is arranged by The Sports Confederation of Denmark, DGI and the Danish Athletic Federation in connection with the programme Move for Life and is supported by the Nordea-fonden and TrygFonden. TV 2 Danmark is the media partner.
Programme
The Crown Prince runs One Mile (1,609 km) in Aalborg, Aarhus, Esbjerg and Odense and concludes by running 10 km through Copenhagen and Frederiksberg’s streets. The Crown Prince will spend around one hour in each city and will, in addition to running, watch entertainment and greet the Danes who turn out. The Crown Princess runs 10 km in Odense.
The Crown Prince surprises school children and runners
On 21 March 2018, The Crown Prince visited school children in Aalborg and runners in Aarhus in connection with training for the Royal Run.
In Aalborg, it was a group of children from Skansevejens Skole who were surprised by The Crown Prince. In connection with Royal Run, there is a special focus in Aalborg on children and motion, and in this connection the group RUNNERS helped the school children get going with their training on 21 March.
In Aarhus, The Crown Prince visited a group of runners who had met up for joint training in front of Marselisborg Palace ahead of Royal Run.
The Crown Prince surprises injured veterans
On 11 April 2018, The Crown Prince surprised a group of injured veterans who had gathered in the Deer Park in Klampenborg to train for the Royal Run. The training was arranged by the Sports Confederation of Denmark’s Soldier Project, which is a sports offer for physically and psychologically injured veterans.
The Sports Confederation of Denmark’s Soldier Project is a fellowship and a sports project for injured veterans. The project contributes to inspiring and supporting physically and psychologically soldiers to find their way back to an independent and meaningful life. Veteran soldiers and currently-serving soldiers fall in together for the Royal Run in Esbjerg.
Royal Run app
On 3 April 2018, Royal Run launched an app that has the goal of motivating Danes to engage in motion.
In the app, you can delve into the universe “Train like The Crown Prince”, where The Crown Prince share some of his training experiences. The app is aimed at, among others, Danes who are currently training for the Royal Run. The Crown Prince’s running experiences are shared on a running tour with Thomas Nolan, who is a professional running instructor and former national coach.
The app functions both as a so-called ”race-day” app where runners and spectators can, on the actual 21 May race day, get information about the run in the city where they are participating. In addition, the app is meant as a means of motivation for those who would like to have more motion in their everyday lives.
The app is free and accessible for iOS and Android. The app can be downloaded in the App Store and Google Play.
22 May - Reception on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog
On 22 May, The Crown Prince hosts a reception for The Crown Prince’s patronages aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.
23 May - Visit in Aarhus
On 23 May, the Crown Prince Couple visit Aarhus. Here, the municipality will host a number of visits at companies and organizations. The day starts with a visit at Filmby Aarhus, where the Crown Prince Couple will be introduced to the city’s film, business and entrepreneur environment. Afterwards, the Crown Prince Couple participate in the opening of the Aarhus International Sailing Centre on the waterfront.
23 May - Opening of the Crown Prince Frederik Centre for Public Leadership
On 23 May, The Crown Prince Couple participate in the opening of a new research centre at Aarhus University. HRH The Crown Prince presides over the opening of the centre, which will be named "the Crown Prince Frederik Centre for Public Leadership". The centre will be an international power centre for delivery of research-based knowledge about public leadership and anchored in the Department of Political Science, from which The Crown Prince earned a Master’s degree in political science in 1995.
In connection with the announcement of the centre’s opening, The Crown Prince said:
“Public leadership deals with the quality of the public services and the interaction with the private sector. Good public leadership creates value for the entire society and is a crucial factor for success in our welfare model. It is also a prerequisite for companies to succeed. I am proud that the new centre will bear my name and I am glad to actively back up the centre’s work.”
The Crown Prince will come in as a member of the centre’s Governance Committee, which will work to ensure the centre’s international position.
24 May - Unveiling of portrait at Frederiksborg Palace
On 24 May, the Crown Prince Couple participate in the unveiling of a new portrait of HRH The Crown Prince. The portrait unveiling ceremony takes place at The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Palace at 15.00.
The new portrait will be the centrepiece of an exhibition with the portraits of the Australian artist Ralph Heimans. The exhibition “Ralph Heimans Portraits” displays a substantial part of the artist’s works, which include a portrait of HRH The Crown Princess, members of the British royal family and international personalities.
In connection with The Crown Prince’s 50th birthday, the museum also opens the exhibition “HRH Crown Prince Frederik – Prince of Denmark”, which through clothing and pictures tells about The Crown Prince with a focus on the events and themes that are central in The Crown Prince’s life story. The exhibit provides a wide range of thematic insights into The Crown Prince’s life through five decades.
The exhibitions open to the public on 25 May and can be seen until 2 September 2018.
26 May - Changing of the guard at Amalienborg
On 26 May, The Queen hosts a gala banquet at Christiansborg Palace on the occasion of The Crown Prince’s 50th birthday with the participation of the royal family as well as guests from Denmark and abroad.

27 May - All of Denmark celebrates The Crown Prince
On 27 May 2018, HRH The Crown Prince and the royal family attend DR’s birthday show “All of Denmark celebrates The Crown Prince”. The show will be broadcast live from the Royal Arena, Copenhagen on the TV channel DR 1.
With the show, DR wishes to mark The Crown Prince’s birthday, and there will be features and music, among other things. The Danish band Lukas Graham and the Danish singer Oh Land are among the performing artists.
