The celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Dutch immigration to Store Magleby

HM The Queen and HRH Princess Beatrix were present on 20 May 2022 at the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Dutch immigration to Store Magleby in Dragør Municipality. The Queen's and Princess Beatrix’s visit marked that it was 501 years ago that the Danish king Christian II invited a number of Dutch farmers to Amager, where they settled in Store Magleby. Upon arrival at Dragør Town Hall, the two royal guests were received by Dragør's mayor, Kenneth Gøtterup.

The Queen and The Princess were presented with traditional Shrovetide barrel mallets. Later in the day, Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness observed Shrovetide barrel riding, in which galloping riders hit barrels with mallets. The tradition originates from The Netherlands and has been a tradition in Store Magleby for several hundred years.

At Museum Amager, The Queen and The Princess were welcomed by museum director Søren Mentz, and in the museum's courtyard, Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness were introduced to citizens dressed in traditional Amager costumes. Afterwards, The Queen and The Princess visited the special exhibition "Fra Amagers private skatkammer", which offers 500 years of local history told through objects from private homes. The exhibition is on display in connection with Museum Amager's 100th anniversary.

In the photo, museum director Søren Mentz tells about a painting in which the motif has its starting point in a royal visit at Museum Amager 100 years ago. In the painting, the former queen of The Netherlands, Queen Wilhelmina, and Prince Hendrik as well as Christian X and Queen Alexandrine appear with Crown Prince Frederik (IX).

Throughout generations, the descendants of the Dutch farmers who came to Store Magleby 500 years ago have developed the specialized Amager farming method, which is a particular way of growing vegetables. The farmers sold the produce in Copenhagen, where Amagertorv (Amager Square) was among their selling spots.
