HRH The Crown Princess and HM Queen Máxima of the Netherlands are two of the keynote speakers at the international conference, which takes place 3-6 November in The Hague in Holland.

The Crown Princess, in her capacity as chairman of The Mary Foundation, participates in the conference, which has the objective of establishing exchanges of knowledge and experience across cultures and nationalities – ultimately, to stop violence against women.

HM Queen Máxima speaks at the conference on 4 November and The Crown Princess speaks on 5 November. Beyond her speech, The Crown Princess will take part in the conference on 4 and 5 November, and The Mary Foundation will also hold two workshops about the foundation’s work against domestic violence.

The Crown Princess participated in the 2nd World Conference of Women’s’ Shelters in 2012 in Washington and has, for a number of years, committed herself to the task of combatting violence against women – as chairman of The Mary Foundation, as a member of the High Level Task Force for the ICPD (International Conference on Population and Development), and as patron of both the UN Population Fund and Maternity Worldwide.

The conference offers a wide range of workshops about topics that relate to the complex problem, including empowerment of women affected by violence, international cooperation in the area and opportunities to influence the international agenda.

The Mary Foundation’s two workshops will deal with the projects Kattunneq and Advice for Life. Kattunneq is a Danish-Greenlandic collaboration aimed at strengthening the Greenlandic women’s shelters through experience exchanges and competency development. Advice for Life is a project that offers free and professional economic, legal and social counselling to women who live with domestic violence.

Upwards of a thousand people from more than 100 countries will participate in the conference in The Hague. The Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science Jet Bussemaker opens the conference on Tuesday, 3 November.

The conference was last held in Washington in 2012 and in Alberta, Canada in 2008. The Global Network of Women’s Shelters (GNWS) is behind the conference, which is organized in cooperation with local organizations.
