Programme for state visit to Australia

Their Majesties The King and Queen will undertake a state visit to Australia from 14–19 March 2026. The King and Queen will be accompanied by Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard and a large Danish business delegation.

The state visit aims to further strengthen the already strong relations between Australia and Denmark across cultural, economic, and foreign policy areas. Building on the strategic partnership established in 2023, the visit will promote collaboration in areas including the green transition and economic security.

Green transition will be a key focus, with 55 Danish companies participating in the business initiative Partnering for a Green, Secure, and Sustainable Tomorrow, highlighting renewable energy and energy-efficient urban development. Nature and cultural preservation will also feature as part of the programme.

Saturday, 14 March
Uluṟu, Northern Territory

Welcome by the First Nations Community
Their Majesties will take part in a formal welcome at the
Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park Cultural Centre. Senior Aṉangu will give a tour of the centre and welcome The King and Queen with traditional dance (inma).

Visit to Kulata Academy Café
Their Majesties will meet students who work at the café as part of their training programme. Kulata Academy Café is part of the National Indigenous Training Academy (NITA), which offers paid internships and traineeships in tourism and hospitality for Indigenous young people from across Australia.

Sunset at Uluṟu
Accompanied by Senior Aṉangu, Their Majesties will visit a lookout to experience the sunset over Uluṟu. Aṉangu are the Traditional Owners of Uluṟu-Kata Tjuta National Park, which has been inhabited for tens of thousands of years. Uluṟu is a massive sandstone formation rising 348 meters above the flat desert landscape, changing color throughout the day and glowing red and orange at sunrise and sunset.

Sunday, 15 March
Uluṟu, Northern Territory

Sunrise at Uluṟu
Their Majesties, accompanied by a guide, will visit
Muṯitjulu Waterhole at sunrise. The site and surrounding landscape hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for Aṉangu people.

Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Ceremonial Welcome by the Governor-General
The King and Queen will be welcomed at Government House Canberra by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia HE the Hon Ms Sam Mostyn AC and her partner
HE Mr Simeon Beckett SC. Canberra is the capital of Australia and the country’s political and administrative centre, hosting the government and Parliament.

State Banquet
The official state banquet will be held at Government House, hosted by the Governor-General HE The Hon Ms Sam Mostyn AC and her partner. The Governor-General will deliver a speech, followed by a speech from The King.


Monday, 16 March
Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Wreath-laying at the War Memorial
Their Majesties, accompanied by Governor-General HE The Hon Ms Sam Mostyn AC and her partner, will honour the service of the Australian Defence Forces in wars and international missions since World War I.

Following the ceremony, The King and Queen will take a short walk in front of the monument.

Meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
Their Majesties will meet Prime Minister The Honorable Anthony Albanese MP. At Parliament House, The King and Queen will also be introduced to selected works from Indigenous Works, part of the Australian Parliament House art collection.

Meeting with the Denmark-Australia Parliamentary Friendship Group
The King and Queen will meet with members of this parliamentary group, representing all Australian states and territories.

Opening of the Danish-Australian Life Science Event
Their Majesties will officially open a conference highlighting government, business, and research collaboration in innovation, prevention, and health solutions, showcasing Danish-Australian partnerships and Denmark’s leadership in life sciences.


Tuesday, 17 March
Melbourne, Victoria

Reception at Government House Victoria
Their Majesties will be officially welcomed to Victoria by the Governor, HE Professor the Hon Margaret Gardner AC and her partner, Professor Glyn Davis AC. The welcome will be followed by lunch with representatives from Danish and Australian business sectors.

Following lunch, a Royal Business Walk will present ten Danish companies participating in the Danish Strongholds initiative.

Short Urban Walk on Sustainable Renovation
The King and Queen will take a short walk in the Prahran redevelopment area, seeing examples of existing buildings, projects under construction, and completed sustainable housing. The walk will conclude with The Queen giving a talk on their personal experiences with sustainable transformation, based on the Fredensborg Annex.

Visit to Port of Melbourne
Their Majesties will visit Port of Melbourne to explore the port’s role in the green transition and sustainable solutions in the maritime sector. The visit includes signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and a tour presenting Danish solutions in renewable energy and green transition.

Visit to Melbourne Cricket Ground
The King and Queen will participate in an event with the Australian Football League (AFL), highlighting the shared sporting culture between Denmark and Australia, with a focus on Australian rules football.


Wednesday, 18 March
Melbourne, Victoria

Opening of the Business Conference
Their Majesties will join the Royal Business Walk with businesses from the Green Buildings and Renewable Energy sectors and their Australian partners, followed by the official opening of the conference Partnering for a Green, Secure, and Sustainable Tomorrow.

Visit to Melbourne Children’s Campus
The King and Queen will receive an introduction to Danish-Australian collaboration in stem cell research, meeting researchers and learning about projects including participation from Aarhus University.

Visit to Headspace South Melbourne
Their Majesties will highlight youth mental health at Headspace South Melbourne. Jason Trethowan, Headspace CEO, will brief them on the organisation’s work providing safe spaces for young people, followed by meetings with some of the centre’s clients.

Opening of Art Exhibition
The King and Queen will open an exhibition by the Danish-Australian artist duo Rhoda Ting & Mikkel Bojesen, showcasing their experiments with the relationship between nature and culture, as well as the natural and the synthetic.

Return Reception at Royal Botanical Garden
Their Majesties will host a reception, An Evening in the Garden, in Melbourne’s Royal Botanical Garden. The King will give a welcome toast. The event provides an opportunity to thank Australia’s Governor-General, government, partners, and to meet invited guests.


Thursday, 19 March
Hobart, Tasmania

Welcome in Hobart, Tasmania
Their Majesties will be officially welcomed to Tasmania by Governor, HE the Hon Barbara Baker AC, including a traditional smoking ceremony led by an Aboriginal representative, marking respect for the land and people of Tasmania.

Visit to Alum Cliffs Marine Reserve
The King and Queen will join marine researchers from the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) to learn about kelp forest restoration and marine biodiversity, highlighting climate change impacts on marine ecosystems.

Visit to INCAT Shipyard
Their Majesties will visit INCAT in Hobart. INCAT builds high-speed catamarans and is currently constructing the world’s largest battery-powered ferries for Danish operator Molslinjen. The King and Queen will see the dock and the battery compartment of a completed ferry.

Visit to The Agrarian Kitchen
Their Majesties will visit this award-winning, hyper-local cooking school and restaurant focused on sustainable and circular food practices.

Visit to MONA, The Museum of Old and New Art
Their Majesties will tour MONA with founder David Walsh and attend a pop-up concert by Danish electropop duo ROYA in one of the museum’s exhibition spaces.

Short city walk through Hunter Street
The King and Queen will walk along Hunter Street, which is known for its many historic buildings.

State Reception
Tasmanian Governor, HE the Hon Barbara Baker AC will host a state reception with specially invited guests, marking the conclusion of The King and Queen’s state visit to Australia.
