State Visit from the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam
At the invitation of Their Majesties The King and Queen, His Excellency General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam and President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Tô Lâm, and his wife, Mrs Ngô Phương Ly, will pay a State Visit to Denmark from 19 to 21 October 2026.
Viet Nam and Denmark have enjoyed long-standing and friendly relations since 1971, when Denmark became one of the first Western countries to recognise North Vietnam.
Bilateral relations were strengthened in 2023 by a Green Strategic Partnership, which complements the Comprehensive Partnership established in 2013. Relations are further underpinned both by government-to-government cooperation in the fields of energy, food, education, health and statistics, and by the strong engagement of Danish companies in Viet Nam's ever-growing economy.
This year, Denmark and Viet Nam celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the State Visit marks both the historic bilateral ties and the strengthened cooperation ahead. There are strong people-to-people and commercial ties between Denmark and Viet Nam. More than 18,200 Danish citizens with Vietnamese roots live in Denmark, and there are now approximately 150 Danish companies in Viet Nam. The Royal Family also has a special connection to Viet Nam. Prince Henrik spent part of his childhood in Hanoi, and in 2022 The King and Queen, then Crown Prince and Crown Princess, paid their most recent official visit to Viet Nam.
The visit will be an opportunity to highlight areas of mutual interest such as green solutions, health and food, as well as further regional and international cooperation. The State Visit will also be an opportunity to reaffirm the strong mutual commercial interests.
On Monday 19 October, The King and Queen will host a State Banquet at Christiansborg Palace in honour of the President and Mrs Ngô Phương Ly, who will be accompanied during the visit by a number of ministers, senior officials and a business delegation.
The final programme and the press programme for the visit will be published at a later date. Applications for press accreditation will be handled through the International Press Centre.
