State visits to Estonia and Lithuania
The days of 27-29 January 2026, Their Majesties The King and The Queen will pay state visits to Estonia and Lithuania. The King and The Queen will be accompanied by Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen and Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen on the state visits in Estonia and Lithuania as well as Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard on the visit in Lithuania.
The King and The Queen paid the first of three state visits to the Baltic countries in Latvia in October 2025. Denmark has strong historical ties to all three countries and established diplomatic relations for the first time in 1921. Denmark never recognised the Soviet annexation of the Baltic countries and, in August 1991, was among the first to re-establish diplomatic relations following their breakaway from the Soviet Union. The relationship between Denmark and the three countries is characterised by joint interests, mutual respect, and a shared vision of a free, secure and prosperous Europe.
The upcoming state visits will reaffirm the longstanding and close relations between Denmark and Estonia and Lithuania, which are not only based on geographical proximity, but also on a set of strong shared values. The visits will help to underscore the joint European commitment and the continuing support for Ukraine.
Estonia, 27-28 January
The President of Estonia, His Excellency Alar Karis, has invited The King and The Queen for a state visit. The visit in Estonia will particularly focus on digital resilience and cyber security, and The King and The Queen will among other things visit the national Estonian cyber security and innovation centre CR14, where they will receive presentations of defence exercises and simulations of cyberattacks.
There will be official programme items such as the reception of The King and The Queen, a state dinner with a concert, and meetings with The President and First Lady, the prime minister and the parliament. The President and First Lady bid farewell to The King and The Queen at a very special place for the bilateral relationship, in The Danish King’s Garden in Tallinn, where, according to the legend, Dannebrog descended from the sky in 1219.
Lithuania, 28-29 January
In Lithuania, The King and The Queen have been invited for a state visit by the President of Lithuania, His Excellency Gitanas Nausėda. Here, there will be particular focus on defence preparedness, including visits to the military barracks of the Lithuanian home guard and the voluntary defence force Riflemen’s Union. Among other things, The King and The Queen and The President will participate in the opening of a business forum focused on energy security and defence.
Official programme items include a wreath-laying ceremony at Antakalnis Cemetery, a state dinner, and meetings with The President and First Lady, the prime minister and the parliament. The state visit concludes with visits to a basketball academy and the opening of the exhibition “Friends in Need” about Denmark and Lithuania at the National Library in Vilnius.
The full programme for the state visits to Estonia and Lithuania will be announced at a later date.
