The visit’s second day 20 September 2023 began for The Crown Prince with a morning run in Central Park together with the UN ambassadors’ running club.

Under the slogan “Running for the security council”, The Crown Prince helped to raise awareness of Denmark’s candidacy for the UN Security Council.

Denmark is a candidate for a non-permanent seat when an election is held for the UN Security Council for the period of 2025-2026. If Denmark is elected, it will be Denmark’s fifth time as a member of the Security Council. The last time was in 2005-2006.

Later in the morning, The Crown Prince took part together with Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen in the annual ministerial meeting between Nordic ministers and the foreign affairs ministers of the eight member states of SICA (The Central American Integration System), which include Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

His Royal Highness opened the meeting, which had special focus on climate, peace and security as well as multilateral cooperation, with a welcome speech.

In mid-morning, His Royal Highness, together with Minister for Finance Nicolai Wammen attended the opening of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ UN Climate Ambition Summit, which was aimed at accelerating concrete actions on climate change before the COP28 climate summit in December.

Later in the day, on the UN mission’s terrace, The Crown Prince was able to extend a welcome to the annual ministerial meeting between Nordic ministers and the foreign affairs ministers of the 15 member states of CARICOM (The Caribbean Community), which include Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, as well as Trinidad and Tobago.

His Royal Highness and Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen took part in the meeting, which focused on the topics of multilateralism, sustainable development and climate. In the evening, The Crown Prince participated in the Pacific Leaders reception, which was held by Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS). PSIDS is an association of 14 Pacific Ocean islands which are among the most exposed to climate change in the world due to cyclones and rising sea levels.
