Wreath-laying ceremony at Roskilde Cathedral

On 14 January 2022, HM The Queen, The Crown Prince Couple, TRH Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and HRH Princess Benedikte took part in a wreath laying ceremony at Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid’s gravesite at Roskilde Cathedral in connection with the 50 years anniversary of Frederik IX’s death.

At the ceremony, the Chaplain-in-Ordinary read a text and concluded with the Lord’s Prayer, before a trumpeter from the Royal Danish Navy Band played “Denmark’s last post”.

As the first among kings, Frederik IX was buried outside together with Queen Ingrid in a separate and modern chapel. The open mausoleum or monument, which is surrounded by an octagonal red brick wall, was designed by the architects Inger and Johannes Exner together with Roskilde Cathedral architect Wilhelm Wohlert. The floor of the monument consists of 4,000 palm-sized cobblestones from the Faroe Islands. The plants in the chapel are from Denmark, Greenland and the Faroes. The gravestone, which weighs five tons, is made of Greenlandic granite for the island Pardlit near Qaqortoq and crafted by the sculptor Erik Heide. The stone is decorated with a cross shaped as an anchor surrounded by hearts and leaves. The stone bears this text: Frederik IX – Denmark’s king 1947- 1972. Born 11.3.1899 Died 14.1.1972. Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid’s grave is the only one located outside of the Cathedral. Roskilde Cathedral has been the Royal House of Denmark’s official burial church since the 1500s, but even older royal tombs are also found in the Cathedral.
