Program for visit in Lithuania

This year, Denmark and Lithuania can celebrate that it has been 100 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations. In connection with this, HRH The Crown Princess participates in an official celebration of the event in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius the days of 30 September and 1 October 2021.

It is the Republic of Lithuania’s President, HE Gitanas Nausėda, who has invited The Crown Princess to take part in the official celebration, and Minister for Development Cooperation and Minister for Nordic Cooperation Flemming Møller Mortensen will also be there during the visit.

Denmark officially recognized Lithuania on 28 September 1921, and the recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations with the Baltic countries occurred a couple of years after the countries became independent in 1918. This year, it is also the 30th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic ties after Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania broke away from the Soviet Union in 1991. Both in 1921 and in 1991, Denmark was one of the first countries to establish and reestablish diplomatic relations with the Baltic countries.

In recent years, HM The Queen and The Crown Prince Couple have participated in several celebrations of the Baltic countries’ independence in 1918. Thus, The Crown Prince Couple visited Latvia in 2018, The Queen visited Estonia in 2019, and now The Crown Princess visits Lithuania. In addition to that, earlier in the year, The Crown Prince Couple hosted a dinner at Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg in connection with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Denmark and Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
