On three small islets in the Palace Lake in Hillerød sits Frederiksborg Palace, which is the North’s largest Renaissance complex. In front of the palace, by the famous Neptune Fountain situated in the palace garden, the elves have hopped off the white horses after a long ride from Copenhagen. The fountain is a copy of the original, magnificent fountain that Christian IV had made in 1622. But the elves don’t know that story, because they’ve always been asleep when dramatic things have happened in Denmark’s history. However, the elves glean from a tourist guide that the original fountain was hauled off to Sweden in 1659 as part of war reparations, and that the fountain now stands at Drottningholm Palace in Stockholm, where His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden lives.

Now much wiser, the elves sneak into the immense palace, where they simply have to find the Christmas Angel that Elf Father met several hundred years back. The palace was formerly a royal residence but today houses the National Museum of History. Here, more than 500 years of Denmark’s history is told through a grand collection of portraits, historical paintings, furniture and decorative arts. With all of these things around, it’s not the easiest task to find the way to the Christmas Angel.

The elves nearly decide to give up. But, suddenly, lots of bells start pealing from the palace tower. The most beautiful Christmas music flows out across all of Hillerød, and so the elves fancy that the Christmas Angel has something to do with it.
